BREAKFAST ON THE GO: Made-Ahead Smoothies

If you’re anything like most people these days, you live a busy lifestyle with little to no time to spare in the morning. At breakfast time it can be near impossible to find a quick and easy meal that’s NOT loaded full of SUGAR and PROCESSED CARBS (i.e. pretty much all boxed cereals, up & go breakfast drinks, etc.).
There is a solution! As you’ve more than likely already figured out from the title, it’s MADE-AHEAD SMOOTHIES.
I know you’re probably thinking well sure chopping up some fruit and adding a few ingredients together in a blender doesn’t really take that long….I could do that every, if not most mornings…..but the reality is you probably won’t!


Think about this for a moment….sitting in your freezer is a zip-locked bag containing the perfect amount of fresh, chopped fruit and other ingredients ready to be simply thrown into a blender to make a delicious smoothie in 30 seconds. Compare this to if you had to wash, peel, chop etc. all the ingredients. Need I say more.


The key to eating healthy is being prepared and investing a little time earlier on to save you a lot of time later on!

All you need to do is take 15 minutes to chop up ingredients and organize them into 10 individual zip-lock bags. Each bag will contain the exact ingredients for the smoothie ready to go. Be sure to mix and match and make different flavor combinations. Remember whole natural fruits and vegies of different colours contain different nutrient profiles, so mix and match colours to get all your bodies requirements for optimal health!


Try pre-blending some spinach, kale or other leafy green vegetable and then freezing in an ice tray. Add these green ice cubes to smoothie bags for pretty much no extra calories and a HEAP more nutrition! Play with quantities until you get the blend right for your tasting. The beauty of it is, that although the smoothie will look a green not-so-appetising colour, it will still taste great from the sweatness of the fruit!


Try putting plain yoghurt in an ice tray to make yoghurt cubes. Again add these to pre-packed bags. The beauty again is that you can get maximum health benefits from using plain yoghurt as the fruit in the smoothies will make it taste full of flavour!


  • 1 cup of strawberries, tops chopped off and sliced in halves
  • ¾ cup of diced mango or peaches
  • 3-4 yoghurt cubes (optional)
  • 1-3 green cubes (optional)
  • 1 cup of pineapple
  • 1 kiwi, peeled and sliced
  • 5 mint leaves + ½ cup coconut milk (blended and frozen in muffin tray)
  • 1 cup of blueberries
  • 2 tbs whole flaxseed
  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup plain yoghurt
  • 1 tbs raw honey
  • 6 raw almonds
  • 6 icecubes

(Blend all ingredients and freeze in muffin trays then bag up into individual serving size bags and store in freezer)

  • 1 cup of pineapple or mango, diced
  • 1 bannana, chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 Tbs extra vrigin coconut oil
  • 3cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled
  • 4 ice cubes

(Blend all ingredients and freeze in muffin trays then bag up into individual serving size bags and store in freezer)

  • ½ cup Cherries
  • ½ cup Blackberries
  • 1 ½ cups green leaves (spinach, kale etc)
  • 2 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 ½ tbs chia / flaxseeds
  • 5 raw walnuts

(Blend mint and other green leaves and freeze in muffin trays then bag up into individual serving size bags and store in freezer)


Each zip-locked smoothie bag should contain exact ratio of ingredients for 1 smoothie. Remove from freezer and add to blender with a little water (your choice of quantity depending on desired consistency) and blend. DONE!
